1. Definition
Surface epithelium is a layer of highly compacted cells that covers the external and internal surfaces of the body, including the skin, organs, and cavities. Its functions include protection, secretion, and absorption.
2. Classification
2.1. after number of cell layers
- Simple epithelium
- Pseudostratified epithelium
- Stratified epithelium
2.2. after form of the cell
- Squamous epithelium
- Cuboidal epithelium
- Columnar epithelium
2.2. after level of keratinization
- keratinized
- non keratinized
Also there is transitional epithelium (urothelium)
3. Tips for recognizing different epithelia
Simple squamous and stratified epithelia: Never have surface projections
Simple cuboidal: no surface projections (e.g., duct of a gland), brush border (e.g., kidney tubules)
Simple columnar: no surface projections (duct of a gland), brush border (e.g., intestines), kinocilia (e.g., fallopian tube)
Pseudostratified: almost ALWAYS have surface projections (sterocilia – epididymis, kinocilia – respiratory tract), no surface projections in certain ducts
