1. Definition
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a slow progressiv inflammatory disease of the airways that results in a progressiv loss of lung function. Belongs to the obstructive pulmonary diseases and is characterized by a reduction in FEV1 and the Tiffeneau index.
COPD has two forms: obstructive bronchitis and emphysema. Both also occur in combination.
2. Etiology
The leading cause of developing COPD is cigarette smoke. Passiv smoking also increases the risk of COPD. Air pollution, e.g. smog, and work-related exposure as well as alpha1 -antitrypsin deficiency are also associated with the development of COPD.
