1. Definition

Feedback refers to a system whose output variable has a modulating effect on the input variable.

2. Classification

There are two different types of feedback:

Negative feedback (more frequent): For example, an enzyme at the start of a metabolic pathway is inhibited by high concentrations of the end product.
Positive feedback: enhances the regulatory effect (e.g. effect of estradiol on GnRH and LH secretion in the middle of the cycle)
