1. Definition
MHC Class I molecules are cell surface proteins that present intracellularly derived peptides to cytotoxic CD8+ T cells, playing a important role in the immune system’s ability to detect and eliminate virus-infected and cancerous cells.
2. Function
- Present peptides derived from intracellular proteins (e.g., viral proteins, tumor antigens)
- Alert the immune system to infected or abnormal cells
- Interact with cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CD8+ T cells), leading to the destruction of infected or cancerous cells
3. Expression
- Found on all nucleated cells in the body
- Especially abundant on cells that are targets for viral infections (e.g., epithelial cells, lymphocytes)
4. Peptide Source
- Endogenously derived proteins, processed by the proteasome and transported into the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) by the TAP (Transporter associated with Antigen Processing) complex.
