1. Definition
Myoepithelium consists of specialized epithelial cells (Myoepithelial Cell) with contractile properties found in glands like the mammary, sweat, and salivary glands. These cells aid in expelling glandular secretions by contracting in response to hormonal or neural stimuli.
2. Histology
In histology, myoepithelial cells appear as flattened, spindle-shaped cells located between the glandular epithelium and the basal lamina. Under a microscope, myoepithelial cells are often difficult to see in routine H&E staining but can be visualized using special stains (Azan stain).
